Our story

Starting an oyster farm

With the altruistic hopes of building protected oyster reefs in Casco Bay,  my brother, Keith Butterfield, began growing oysters in 2013 with the help of our father, Philip Butterfield.  They learned a lot about the Maine coastline and our Casco Bay waters and Keith eventually decided to become a full time oyster farmer with a bent toward technological innovation.

"I became the FlipFarm Distributor because I was an oyster farmer who saw aquaculture challenges firsthand."

- Keith Butterfield

Looking for a better way to farm

Flipping oyster cages is labor intensive and it was  driving up our costs.  We were producing around 50,000 oysters per farmer per year and it wasn’t going to be profitable at scale.  Pulling oyster cages up to the side of our boat to fill them or harvest or even flipping cages was back breaking work which drove up our injury rates.

It was getting tough to find enough workers who loved oyster farming but could tolerate the exhausting work. Keith had an aging father on the boat with him and several nephews and sisters who loved the business but not the extreme working conditions.

Keith  knew there had to be a better way.

Sharing better tools with fellow farmers

When he researched and tested the FlipFarm system, developed in New Zealand, Keith knew he had found something special. FlipFarm was the only technology he could find that facilitated scaling his oyster farm business in a reliable and profitable manner in New England waters.

A lasting legacy

Keith and Philip both passed away in the spring of 2026.  They leave a lasting legacy in the oyster farming community throughout Maine and the Northeast. Keith's brother Kevin now leads the Distributorship and he and two sisters are honored to step into what Keith built.

We want to share this technology with you.  We believe that all shellfish farmers deserve the highest level of support in implementing the FlipFarm system, and we are committed to providing just that.
